De Nederlandse huisarts in Nerja Dr. Rik Heymans is geboren in Dendermonde, Vlaanderen, België, waar hij aan de Abdijschool de Latijns-Griekse humaniora volgde. Hij behaalde zijn medische dokterstitel in 1987 aan de Katholieke Universiteit van Leuven en deed zijn militaire dienst als onderdeel van de NAVO-troepen in Duitsland, gelegerd langs de grens met Oost-Duitsland.
Gedurende 10 jaren werkte Dr. Rik Heymans hij in het Universitair Ziekenhuis van Pretoria, en was er docent en Hoofd van Spoedgevallen en Polyklinieken afdelingen. Hij behaalde daar zijn Masters (Specialist) graad in de Huisartsgeneeskunde, en deed uitgebreide ervaring op in chirurgie, cardiologie, en oor-neus en keel ziekten. In 1998 verhuisde Dr. Rik Heymans met zijn vrouw, Karen, naar Nerja.
Tijdens zijn jeugd bracht zijn familie de meeste zomers in dit prachtige deel van de Costa del Sol door,dus de keuze om zich in Nerja te vestigen was duidelijk voor de hand liggend…
De kliniek begon in April 1998 in hun privé-huis, met de tuin als wachtkamer! Het was de meest ontspannen en zeker een van de meest ongewone wachtkamers in Europa, met patiënten met hun gezinnen zittend in de schaduw, met katten en honden om hen te vermaken!
Na de geboorte van hun zoon Hendrik in 1999 werd het snel duidelijk dat de druk van een 24-uurs kliniek niet echt meer verenigbaar was met een familiehuis, zodanig dat dus een nieuwe kliniek in Calle Angustias, 24 werd gebouwd, waar Dr. Rik Heymans nog steeds zijn patiënten ontvangt.
